Journey to a land of authentic culture

Hilton Head is a boot-shaped land that is inhabited by Gullah people. There are several lands in all over the world which are not enlightened with the glory of so-called ‘city life’ and Hilton Head is one among them. 20 miles Northeast of Georgia and 95 miles southwest of Charleston, this land is named after Captain William Hilton.

While most of the native cultures are losing their true essence for mingling with the global culture, Gullah people are very careful about their culture and tradition. With the objective to preserve their own culture, they always maintain a separate identity from the rest of the world. For this, here, you will be acquainted with a culture that you can hardly find anywhere in the world.

Gullah is the West African based system of customs, traditions, beliefs, family life and art forms. Gullah culture is the unique culture of West African who inhabited the Sea Islands of South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida and Georgia.

Their arts, crafts, way of living is completely different from others. If you are one among them who prefer to unravel the culture that is still far away from the spotlight, Hilton Head will be the next travel destination for you.

Each of the things that are related to Gullah people and culture will amaze you. If you are a city dweller, living a fast life would be your first priority. However, the picture is quite opposite in this island. They live a slow-paced lifestyle, where you can hardly see any competition.

They talk in a language that is called Creole. When you visit their neighborhood, you will come to learn about this. Moreover, you can explore their history when visiting the museum. Gullah traditional wear is something that represents their culture. Buy the apparels from the market and wear it to capture a photo.

To take a sunbath, you can spend your time on the beaches during the daytime while you can unwind yourself in the tranquil breeze in the evening. Along with the beaches, there are several places where you can visit with your family members and child if you manage time during your sojourn.

Your tour to Hilton Head will remain incomplete if you don’t visit Gullah Neighborhoods. Historically, they contained clustered extended families, essential skill bearers, a Praise House, food processing mills, spiritual leaders, and access to the waterway. Like other islands, it exemplifies the phenomenon in its village that was established in the late 1860’s.

There are several things that will make you busy all the day. To visit the nearby places, you can rent a bike or cycle. So, biking can be your favorite past-time here. Want to explore the natural history and cultural heritage of the country? Then visit Coastal Discovery Museum. The trails, gardens, live oaks, butterfly enclosure as well as marsh Tacky horses are just a few of the fun experiences you will encounter during your visit.
You can also visit Mitchelville. Situated in Hilton Head Island, it represents a jewel within the Gullah Culture Heritage Corridor that forms the roots of the African-American’s contribution to the heritage of freedom in America.
To visit all the places at your own comfort, book a tour. There are several agencies that offer tour guides with whom you can explore the places. Travel to a land that will enthrall you.
