The lesser known Gullah heritage started with the descendants of slaves transported from West Africa to the “Rice Coast” in Georgia and South Carolina. The Emancipation Proclamation was passed, even though most of the slaves fled to Hilton Head Island and its Union Army outpost, some decided to stay back.
