Sea Island Culture

Have you heard of the Gullah-Geechee culture? If not, here’s an insight into this unique African-American culture which has survived centuries, and continues to live, in the South Eastern Sea Islands of the US.

The Gullah-Geechee people are descendants of African slaves. They were brought here centuries ago to work on the plantations. Even after the end of slavery, they continued to reside here as their work and homes were here. Not until the year 1956 did these natives of the Sea Islands have any link with the mainland. Moving out of the island meant a long ferry ride, and likewise, as the weather conditions here were hot, foreigners never made a visit to the islands. Because they remained isolated from the ever changing society on the mainland, they retained their unique culture, traditions, and heritage; unlike other settlers in US.

The Gullah Geechee corridor extends along the South Eastern coast of United States; from the St. John’s River in Florida, to the Cape Fear River in North Carolina. Gullah refers to the name of the natives residing in North and South Carolina, while Geechee refers to the people residing in Georgia and Florida.

A visit to these islands will give you a unique insight into this age-old Gullah Geechee culture. For an enjoyable and fun-filled holiday here, it is worthwhile to contact a tour operator like Gullah Heritage Trails. They will plan and execute your trip in a way that will make your holiday memorable, and exciting, by helping you to explore a new place, new culture, and more.
So, what are you waiting for? Check for favorable weather, and meet the people residing in the Sea Islands.

Before the gap between the Sea Islands and the mainland was bridged, the descendents of the West African slaves from the island survived by leaning on their rich heritage and expert self sustaining skills. But times have changed and so have the community members residing in the area.

The primary focus now is to keep the culture alive through Hilton Head Tours organized by sponsored touring companies like Gullah Heritage Trail Tours. But with this new initiative, historians, enthusiasts and the curious lot are crowding the island.

If you want to end your vacation with a twist, you can add this tour to your itinerary. It will only take two hours of your time and I bet you will take back something memorable from the tour itself. For more information contact Gullah Heritage Trail Tours.

Title: Saving Gullah Geechee Culture from Extinction

The number of identified languages in the world is approximately 67000. Out of the sum almost 25000 are at risk. Different cultures, different art forms, different ways of living: all at risk. We are losing a lot and why? We are losing ourselves bit by bit because we are an ignorant lot.

Let’s talk about the GullahGeechee culture. So, what do you know about it? Not much, I think. So, this is a unique African American culture I am talking about. The ancestors of the residents came from West Africa as captives. They were forced to work on the coastal plantations of North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Georgia. Different communities intermingled and a brand new language and a brand new culture were born. They retained more of their ancestral traditions and lifestyle choices. Today they have changed themselves to blend in without giving up on their old traditions.

If you want to know more, whenever you plan a vacation to the Sea Islands do not forget to book a tour with Gullah Heritage Trail Tours.
